Saga Dialects

The uniqueness of Saga dialects can be found in the endings of the words. Many original expressions, which are different from standard Japanese, are very interesting to learn.

Step 1

Nukka = hot
Esuka = scary
Harakaku = get angry
Saruku = walk around
Fu(-)ke = fool
Yosowashika = spooky
Gachasuru = bump into
Hiyaka = cold
E(-)kurai = drunken person
No(-)nakasu = lose something
Nemaru = food gets rotten
Cha(-)gakka = feel embarrassed
Zo(-)tan = joke
Gokkabui = cockroach
Ucchakasu = drop something
Tozennaka = feel lonely
Totoshika = clumsy
Oroika = poor in quality, old
Zo(-)gui = play a trick
Juttanbo = mud

Kyuwa Honni Nukkanata = It's really hot today, isn't it?
Dogansuuka Saifuno No(-)nattagota = What should I do? I lost my wallet.
Gya(-) Kechiitagota = It seems I have caught a cold.
Ah, E(-)ku(-)ro(-)ta(-) = Oh, I got drunk.
Kyu(-)no Sha(-)wa Kya(-)no Shun = Today's side dish is clam soup.
Okasan Kono Nimono Nemattogota = Mother, this boiled vegetables seem to be rotten.
Zo(-)tannogoto = Are you joking?
Benkyomo Sende Sotobakkai So(-)tsukuna = Don't play around purposelessly
without studying.
Sogan Harakakandemo Yokaro(-)mon = Don't be so angry.


Lastly, one of the most useful expressions to know is "Soigi" or "Soiginta". It means "See you" or "So long". Saga locals use this expression instead of "Good bye".
